Klondike – 1/13 – 1/14/12

posted Jan 10, 2012 5:53 AM by Andrew Albright   [ updated Jan 10, 2012 5:54 AM ]

-       Meet at 6:30 pm on Friday (a few older Scouts offered to arrive earlier to start organizing items)

-       We return after dinner on Saturday night

·       Scouts to bring money for dinner at Burger King on way home (anyone have coupons from this week’s paper?)

-       Scouts should pack their own bags however; parents are encouraged to help Scouts to ensure they are prepared for winter camping

·       A Klondike packing list was handed out last night

·       Scouts should use lists they made up after MOPC campout to ensure they have what they need

·       Cold Weather reminders are on Troop website

-       Scouts should eat dinner prior to arrival at MOPC on Friday (steer clear of sodas, and caffeine, eat a hearty meal to help stay warm later!

-       Boots are required (Klondike rules state that Scouts arriving with sneakers will be sent home)

·       Scouts need to have 2nd pair of footwear for weekend

-       Remember that Scouts MUST have a Water bottle (i.e. Nalgene) AND a drinking cup (for hot chocolate, etc. – preferably plastic)

-       Remember that metal mess kits and metal cups tend to pull the heat from our food and our fingers!  (The “plastic” Sporks and mess kits are best for winter)

-       Scouts were assigned to bring certain items as required per Patrol for the Klondike competition, ask your Scout which items he was assigned to bring

·       I do not have this list, the Scouts coordinated this, Scouts can contact the SPL if any questions

-       All Scouts should bring Scout supplies

·       Including Handbook, Pen or Pencil, Personal First Aid kit – see list in Scout handbook, Compass, Flashlight and Batteries, Fire Starters

·       They especially need fire starters if he has any, I don’t think many of our Scouts did – and they need at least one for the Patrol

-       Pack for the weather

·       i.e. at least 2 hats, 2 pairs of gloves / mittens – socks work well for hand mittens for sleeping!, 2 pairs of boots, 3-5 pairs of socks, layers, hot hands & feet (optional), a fleece throw is great for extra warmth in bottom of sleeping bag!

-       ** PARENTS – please note that for Klondike and all upcoming camping trips we ask that parents come inside and check their son in w/Troop leader upon arrival at MOPC

* Feel free to contact me with any questions on what to bring – being prepared for winter camping is a priority for safety!!  An unprepared Scout is a safety hazard and will probably not want to go winter camping again as they will not enjoy themselves
